The Sewist works with other members of a small team to create project elements such as stage skirting, masking panels, rain covers, chain bags, custom ratchet straps, and a variety of other soft good solutions to meet client needs. This position will require highly developed sewing skills to ensure elements meet quality guidelines. They will share their skills with others to help boost team efficiency and improve standards.
 
Essential Responsibilities:
 
  • Read, interpret, and follow drawings to accurately manufacture products with minimal direction and oversight from soft goods process lead.
  • Evaluate the quality of materials and/or parts before the manufacturing process is started. Report any concerns to soft goods process lead before continuing with project.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines with precision and speed.
  • Utilize broad knowledge of different fixings required for drapes, e.g. grommets, ties, bungees and chains.
  • Operate webbing cutter, grommet press, and other tools associated with the building of drapes and straps.
  • Utilize cutting tools and layout templates (patterns).
  • Strong understanding to execute the requirements for seam allowances, hems, cutting lines, and tolerances for shrinkage.
  • Repair or modify drapes based on notes provided by other departments, notate modifications on drawings as completed.
  • Maintain high finishing standards (e.g. neat hems and seams).
  • Able to produce drapery with challenging tailoring requirements while still maintaining TAIT standards.
  • Participate in discussions/planning sessions related to constructions methods, materials, and/or attachments to meet project needs. Offer support to design team during prototype phases
  • Assist with estimating project hour requirements.
  • Support soft goods process lead and/or other employees with tasks to ensure client expectations are met
  • Share skills and knowledge with others to help with department development.
  • Perform quality check at project completion before sending for delivery. Notify soft goods process lead of any concerns.
  • Keep accurate counts of material used on a project. Provide information to soft goods process lead or issue in inventory system.
  • Perform daily upkeep on industrial machines and equipment.
  • Evaluate goods that have been returned to stock for reuse, repaired as needed, and shelve for future use.
  • Restock fabric carts and sundries as needed from larger inventory stores.
  • Ensure all spare materials are placed in appropriate storage location with accurate and correct labeling.
  • Perform tasks to company standards to efficiently and effectively meet department goals.
  • Accurately capture all labor hours and material in Epicor.
  • Ensure TAIT’s 5 standards of care are coordinated into all daily activities: Safety, Quality, Team, Schedule, and Cost.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Degree or certification in sewing related field or 2 plus years previous experience sewing experience in drape, awning or similar professional environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience operating an industrial sewing machine (lockstitch, serger, etc.).
  • Understanding of different types of drapes (Austrians, Kabuki, fullness, etc.).
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow drawings to manufacture soft good items.
  • Perform simple math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division) with a calculator.
  • Experience using MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) a plus.
  • Knowledge of Epicor, Slack, and/or Box a plus.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and as a member within a small team environment.
  • Ability to handle changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility with work schedule, including some holidays and alternate shifts as required; ability to work OT (more than 40 hours) in any given week as needed. 
 
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to frequently walk, bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat, stoop, and kneel each day. Specific requirements are:
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Use a sewing machine with foot pedals.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs or team lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to carry 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to pull or push 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to reach overhead.
